History of Fendi

The history of Fendi begins with Edoardo and Adele Fendi who opened a fur and leather workshop in the Italian city of Rome in the year 1925. They strived to make sure that the furs and handbags they made offered the highest quality craftsmanship which earned them an immediate success. The success allowed them to open a second larger shop in 1932 at which time the Fendi name was renowned throughout Rome for the high quality products. This shop was located on Via Veneto which was growing into a very important commercial area at that time. The new store allowed Fendi to increase production volumes. The brand Fendi spread and became better known outside of Rome as the production volumes increased. Fendi was no longer just something loved by the women in the Rome; it was becoming something loved by women in Italy.

Edoardo and Adele Fendi had five children, all daughters and all playing an important role in the history of Fendi. The oldest daughter Paola Fendi started working in her parents company when she was 15 years old in 1946. All the other sister were to follow her as soon as they finished school and together they reformed Fendi to become more in phase with the time and the changes the war had brought to the role of women. The sister presented a long row of new modern concepts and models for the fur and leather design. Their mother, Adele Fendi, was very supportive of her daughters during this process and is believed to have played a large role for the development of her daughters.

In 1964, Fendi opens a shop on via Borgognona which was considered the most elegant street in Rome and the home for many important and well known craftsmen. The following year would become one of the most important in the history of Fendi because 1965 is the year when a then relatively young but well known designer named Karl Lagerfeld starts working for Fendi. Karl Lagerfeld is still designing the Fendi fur collections today and is perhaps the most influential man in the history of Fendi. Also, 1964 is also the year the Fendi double FF logo is created.
